CSSA SOAS Chinese New Year Events Series
Presentation Title:Organization of Petroleum Importing Countries to produce Residual Oil for Stable Economy in a Half-century of Transition to a Greener World.
As one of the SOAS Chinese New Year Events Series, we had also invited Mr Hsu to introduce the importance of Chinese contribution to a greener world and how Chinese government managing to improve the environmental condition in the past few years.
Kenneth J. Hsu, Managing Director of KHC, is a former Petroleum Geologist & Environmental Engineer at the Shell Development Corporation, Professor Emeritus in Geology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology 1967-1994, and member of several science academies including the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (1986)
He has received all three of the highest awards of his profession. For contributions to Earth Science, he was awarded the prestigious Wollaston Medal from the Geological Society of London in 1984. For contributions to Geosciences, the prized Penrose Medal from the Geological Society of America in 2001 and for outstanding contribution to Sedimentary Geology, the revered Twenhofel Medal of the Society for Sedimentary Geology in 1984. He has also received the President’s Award from the American Association of Petroleum Geology for his contribution to the petroleum industry
Hsu’s Key inventions currently being applied in China, to resolve the global crisis such as 3-D Enhanced oil Recovery, Lithium Production, Water Availability, Nitrite-Free Drinking Water etc.
Hsu’s most famous popular science works are ：
The Great Dying: Cosmic Catastrophe, Dinosaurs and the Theory of Evolution;
The Mediterranean was a Desert: A Voyage of the Glomar Challenger (which concerns his work deciphering the Messinian Salinity Crisis；
Challenger At Sea: A Ship That Revolutionized Earth Science.

CSSA-SOAS春节特别活动：美国科学院许靖华院士报告会将于1月23日下午5点在SOAS, Khalili Lecture Theatre (KLT)举行。许院士作为中国地质学领域的著名学者，会在这次活动中将其毕生的研究成果和学习经历介绍给大家.另外，这次讲座作为亚非学院中国春节特别活动系列中的一个，我们也邀请许院士为大家着重介绍中国在世界坏境保护领域的突出贡献.
许院士祖籍扬州, 1944年考入中央大学（现南京大学）地质系，1948年7月毕业并获学士学位。同年赴美留学，1950年在俄亥俄州立大学获硕士学位，1953年在洛杉矶加州大学获博士学位。1954年入美国壳牌石油公司从事研究工作，1963年到1967年在纽约州立大学和加州大学任教。1967年起移居瑞士，任教于瑞士联邦理工大学，先后担任该校地球科学院院长、地质研究所所长。曾任国际沉积学会主席、国际海洋地质学委员会主席、欧洲地球物理协会首任会长。1984年获世界地学界最高荣誉Twenhofel乌拉斯坦勋章。并曾获国际地质学界的另外两个荣誉：英国地质学会授予的最高荣誉Wollaston沃拉斯顿奖章（1984）和美国地质学会授予的Penrose彭罗斯奖章（2001).
在国际科学界，他被称为“许旋风”。
他挑战达尔文，提出大灭绝的灾变说。晚年他一心致力于地球生态环境保.
