CSSA SOAS Chinese New Year Events Series

Presentation Title:Organization of Petroleum Importing Countries to produce Residual Oil for Stable Economy in a Half-century of Transition to a Greener World.

As one of the SOAS Chinese New Year Events Series, we had also invited Mr Hsu to introduce the importance of Chinese contribution to a greener world and how Chinese government managing to improve the environmental condition in the past few years.

Kenneth J. Hsu, Managing Director of KHC, is a former Petroleum Geologist & Environmental Engineer at the Shell Development Corporation, Professor Emeritus in Geology at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology 1967-1994, and member of several science academies including the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (1986)

He has received all three of the highest awards of his profession. For contributions to Earth Science, he was awarded the prestigious Wollaston Medal from the Geological Society of London in 1984. For contributions to Geosciences, the prized Penrose Medal from the Geological Society of America in 2001 and for outstanding contribution to Sedimentary Geology, the revered Twenhofel Medal of the Society for Sedimentary Geology in 1984. He has also received the President’s Award from the American Association of Petroleum Geology for his contribution to the petroleum industry

Hsu’s Key inventions currently being applied in China, to resolve the global crisis such as 3-D Enhanced oil Recovery, Lithium Production, Water Availability, Nitrite-Free Drinking Water etc.

Hsu’s most famous popular science works are ：
The Great Dying: Cosmic Catastrophe, Dinosaurs and the Theory of Evolution;

The Mediterranean was a Desert: A Voyage of the Glomar Challenger (which concerns his work deciphering the Messinian Salinity Crisis；

Challenger At Sea: A Ship That Revolutionized Earth Science.

CSSA-SOAS春节特别活动：美国科学院许靖华院士报告会将于1月23日下午5点在SOAS, Khalili Lecture Theatre (KLT)举行。许院士作为中国地质学领域的著名学者，会在这次活动中将其毕生的研究成果和学习经历介绍给大家.另外，这次讲座作为亚非学院中国春节特别活动系列中的一个，我们也邀请许院士为大家着重介绍中国在世界坏境保护领域的突出贡献.

许院士祖籍扬州, 1944年考入中央大学（现南京大学）地质系，1948年7月毕业并获学士学位。同年赴美留学，1950年在俄亥俄州立大学获硕士学位，1953年在洛杉矶加州大学获博士学位。1954年入美国壳牌石油公司从事研究工作，1963年到1967年在纽约州立大学和加州大学任教。1967年起移居瑞士，任教于瑞士联邦理工大学，先后担任该校地球科学院院长、地质研究所所长。曾任国际沉积学会主席、国际海洋地质学委员会主席、欧洲地球物理协会首任会长。1984年获世界地学界最高荣誉Twenhofel乌拉斯坦勋章。并曾获国际地质学界的另外两个荣誉：英国地质学会授予的最高荣誉Wollaston沃拉斯顿奖章（1984）和美国地质学会授予的Penrose彭罗斯奖章（2001).

在国际科学界，他被称为“许旋风”。
他挑战达尔文，提出大灭绝的灾变说。晚年他一心致力于地球生态环境保.

Monkey: Journey To The West

The CSSA of The School of Oriental and African Studies (CSSA SOAS ) and Meridian Society will be hosting another talk on Friday 14th November, 2008 in association with the CSSA of The Imperial College and London School of Economics. The lecture will be delivered by Mr Chen Shi-Zheng, director of the opera “Monkey: Journey To The West”.

The lecture is entitled “Monkey: Journey To The West”. In a mythical time, on the Mountain of Flower and Fruit, Monkey was hatched from a stone egg. So begins the tale of the Monkey King, our headstrong, self-important hero. After crossing the all-powerful Buddha, Monkey is given the opportunity to redeem himself by traveling to India with the young monk Tripitaka to bring the Holy Scriptures back to China. Monkey: Journey To The West re-tells the 400 year-old tale for a new audience. This production is a triumph of collaboration – between old and new, sight and sound, East and West.

The speaker Mr Chen Shi-Zheng is a director, choreographer, singer, and actor. He was born in Changsha, Hunan, China. As a teenager, he studied with some of the great masters of Chinese opera and became a leading traditional opera actor, performing in many productions throughout China. He immigrated to the US in 1987 and has worked to create a new expression that crosses the boundaries between music, opera, theatre, and dance, and between different cultures. In Spring 2006, he directed the premiere of the contemporary opera “Mercury Light World” by Chinese composer Cong Su for the Berlin Festival. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Hunan Arts School in China with Honors in 1981, and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Performance Studies from New York University / Tisch School of the Arts. In 2000 he received the title of Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Government.

子午社主席、英国人文学者 苏立群 先生“春秋义学”大型系列讲座之第二讲：“外行人的妄说——把生意做成经典！”

第一讲：参悟“红楼梦”的“好了歌”（已于10月24在亚非学院讲毕）

第二讲：“外行人的妄说——把生意做成经典！”由当前的金融危机想到明代李晋德的“商贾一览醒迷”以及两首商歌。（帝国理工大学）

第三至第六讲：奥运引起的思索：中国人到底有什么“与众不同”？——同学，知道这些“不同”吗？你懂得“知己”方能“知彼”，“定位”乃成功的秘诀吗？（时间、地点待通知）

在这个系列的第二讲中， 苏 老师主要是帮助大家了解中国儒释道的智慧以及伦常观在贸易与商战中的运用。

 

The CSSA SOAS, LSE, Imperial College and the Meridian Society will be hosting a series of Chinese culture talks. The upcoming event is on the topic of Social Documentary in China which is lectured by David Liqun Su.

The lecturer, Mr David Liqun Su, is the President of the Meridian Society who established Chinese language specialist, humanist, writer and playwright. Mr. Su is well known as having been the main Mandarin teacher at the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London between 1987 and 2007. For over 20 years Mr Su has taught Chinese language and culture classes at SOAS to individuals, businesses and organisations, including MOD, Foreign Office, British Council and financial institutions.

This lecture will be conducted in Chinese Mandarin.

As a result of extensive Research & Development, the technologies have been approved by the state Counselors’ Office of the Prime Minister of the PRC; and by Nobel Laureate Samuel C.C. Ting (MIT), who won the Nobel Prize for the Physics in 1976, and Henry T. Yang, Chancellor of the University of California, who both serve on Wn Jiabao’s KHC Advisory Board.
